THE DO’S 

Before you fall in love with a million flickering candle ideas, ask your venue what’s allowed. Some venues are totally cool with open flames, while others will only allow LED candles (or none at all). If you’re set on having real candlelight, ask about alternatives like enclosed lanterns or hurricane vases to meet fire safety rules. And if they need anything underneath them to catch the wax.

CREATE AN ATMOSPHERE

Candles are perfect for non-traditional weddings, whether you’re having a boho forest celebration, a gothic-inspired affair, or a cozy backyard dinner party. Use them to light up tables, line walkways, or add warmth to a chill lounge area. Make sure you use mixed-height for more of a stylish finish. They can also be a great filler if you have less flowers on your tables. Still creating an epic vibe.

CONSIDER LED CANDLES

If your venue is strict or if you’re worried about safety, high-quality LED candles are a great alternative. They’ve come a long way and now flicker just like the real deal. Use them in high-traffic areas where real flames might be risky, like aisle decor or near fabric-heavy spots (looking at you, draped ceilings and table linens).

GET CREATIVE

ORDERING

If you’re looking for budget-friendly candles, be sure to check the burn time, drip factor, and overall quality before stocking up. Cheaper candles often burn out quickly, so it’s worth testing them in different environments first.

Also, make sure they fit your holders—no one wants a wonky candle! If you’re hiring candlesticks or lanterns from a supplier, don’t hesitate to ask for sizes to ensure you get the perfect fit. A little planning goes a long way to avoid any last-minute candle chaos!

THE DON’TS 

Just because your friend got married there last year with candles everywhere doesn’t mean the rules haven’t changed. Fire codes vary, and venues update policies all the time. And don’t like social media and pinterest fool you. Some venues only allow candles to be lit for shoots. Always double-check!

DON’T OVER DO IT

Yes, candlelight is romantic, but too many can be overwhelming (or worse, hazardous). Keep it balanced —nobody wants a center piece fire hazard or wax dripping on their outfit.

DON’T FORGET ABOUT THE WIND

Outdoor wedding? Think twice before setting out a bunch of tealights in the open air. Wind and candles are not friends. Go for enclosed lanterns, hurricane vases, or even battery-powered candles to avoid disappointment (and burnt-out flames before the ceremony even starts). And not forgetting air con for indoor ceremony and receptions..they will make your candles burn quicker.

DON’T NEGLECT THE CLEAN UP FACTOR

Wax spills are no joke, especially on rental linens or antique furniture. Make sure any wax-dripping candles are safely contained, or use dripless varieties. Your venue (and your deposit) will thank you.

Candles can absolutely add that extra magic to your wedding day, but planning ahead is key. Check with your venue, think about safety, and mix in LED options where needed.
